Services

There are various meanings to the word service. A service could be something provided by a company.

Civil service

The term civil service has two meanings: A branch of governmental service which individuals are hired on the basis of merit which is proven by the use of competitive examinations and a body of employees in any government agency, except the military.

A civil servant or public servant is a civilian public sector employee working for a government department. The term explicitly excludes the armed services, although civilian officials will work at "Defence Ministry" headquarters. The term always includes the (sovereign) state's employees; whether regional, or sub-state, or even civic employees are called "civil servants" varies from every country. In the United Kingdom, for instance, only Crown employees are civil servants, county or city employees are not.

Community service

Community service is an act by a person that benefits the local community. People become involved in community service for many reasons: for some, serving community is a selfless act, for others it is a punishment for something they have done wrong; usually they have broken the law.

"Community service" therefore refers to projects that members of certain youth organizations, such as the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts and some high school students perform. It is also an alternative sentencing technique in the justice system. And at times groups of people will commit to perform service to the community as part of the gift economy.

Examples of community service projects include: Cleaning a park, collecting items for charity such as clothes, food, or furniture. Cleaning roadside verges, helping the elderly in nursing homes, Helping the local fire or police service, helping out at a local library, Tutoring children with learning disabilities, participating in school activities that benefit the wider community.

Customer service

Customer service is the provision of service to customers before, during and after a purchase. Its importance differs by product, industry and customer; defective or broken products can be exchanged or refunded, often only with a receipt. Retail stores will often have a desk or counter dedicated to dealing with returns, exchanges and complaints, or will deal with related functions at the sale desk. Customer service may be provided by a person or by automated means called self-service like an internet site. The experience a customer has with a product is also affected the total service experience.

Customer service is normally an essential part of a company’s customer value plan. From the point of view of a sales process, customer service plays an important role in an organization's ability to generate income and profit. From that perspective, customer service should be included as part of an overall approach to organized improvement.

Domestic service

A domestic worker is someone who works within their employer's household. Domestic workers perform a variety of household services for an individual or a family, from providing care for children (nanny) and elderly people to cleaning and household maintenance, known as housekeeping. Responsibilities may also include cooking, doing laundry and ironing, food shopping and other household errands. Some domestic workers live within the household where they work.
